TMEA and Kyle's Shoes

By Mika Graham

Last week, Scott and I flew to San Antonio to attend the TMEA’s 2019 Convention, (Texas Music Educators Association).  San Antonio is still beautiful this time of year and our boys were in town to perform at the convention.

We stayed a The Hotel Contessa on the Riverwalk.  Our room was beautiful and was within walking distance from the Convention Center.   Our first dinner was at Biga on the Banks.  The atmosphere was lovely and our waiter was friendly.  Unfortunately, the food was a bit disappointing.  I’m not sure we would go back.

We enjoyed a lazy morning the next day, then headed out to find a early lunch to avoid the crowds.   We at at a historical classic restaurant right on the river, Casa Rio.  People watching, listening to the grackles and filling up on chips and queso are always a hit with me.

After lunch, we walked to the Convention Center to walk through the exhibits and to get a good seat for the boy’s concert.  The concert lasted about a hour and half.  They sounded so amazing.  Always blown away by the Texas A&M Wind Symphony….their passion for music is always evident.  So blessed by the opportunity to hear them perform in such an amazing venue.

After the concert, we met up with the boys briefly.  We had the opportunity to give hugs and congratulations on a concert well done.

It was great to see them both of course, but my freshman Kyle stood out a little bit more for me.  Not long into our hugs and congratulations, Kyle says, “Mom, look at my shoes”.  He had some black athletic shoes on with his tuxedo??!!  In spite of all my reminders over the phone to make sure he had everything he needed, the boy had forgotten his dress shoes.  I don’t know how he does it, but he always seems to luck out and come out on top.  After one phone call to his brother’s room, he located a friend’s athletic shoes that fit the bill perfectly!  What cracked me up most, was Scott’s reaction to the whole thing.  He looked at me and said, “Yep, that is my kid…..sounds like something I would have done in college.”   Sometimes, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree no matter how hard you try.
