Stitching Inspiration

By Mika Graham

I remember seeing this panel 15 years ago.  It looks like a room divider of some type.  It made an impression on me.  I remember looking at it and thinking, “I should get out my stitching again”.   Unfortunately, I didn’t have time….was busy chasing two little boys around.

I’m happy to say, I did find time to stitch voraciously about 5 years ago and haven’t really stopped since then.  The colors and textures of the fibers make my soul happy.  I love creating pretty things with my hands.  Stitching just brings happiness to my life….always has.

It’s definitely a wool needlepoint canvas.  It is a perfect depiction of the house, the gardens and the type of flowers grown here.   All all know is what this little plaque says that sits next to it.

It makes my imagination run wild…..  I assume each panel is a large rug size canvas.  Who picked the stitches?  Mutual painting of the canvas or did one gal do it all……what a artist?!   Did they only stitch on it when they were together on Tuesdays?  Where did they store it in the mean time…..someone’s living room?  Who are they?  Do they still meet?  Were they approached to restore the screen or did they locate to screen to hold the canvas?  So curious……

I do know the name and the dates on the bottom are of names of the families that owned the estate and lived there.

Getting out my needlework right now!!!
